Wigan consents 830 Atherton homes

Acting for Tarleton Estates, planner Turley has secured outline planning permission for up to 830 dwellings at a site south of Atherton from Wigan Council.

The 679-acre site, off Leigh Road, is predominantly made up of safeguarded land and forms part of the borough’s ten-year plan for housing. Irregular in shape, it abuts some housing and a school playing field and sits south east of a site currently under development by Bellway Homes off Bee Fold Lane

The application was considered at July’s planning committee, but was deferred, since which time Turley has provided further information and a site visit has been undertaken.

Addressing the planning committee, Rob Rawlinson of surveyor Acland Bracewell, acting as agent for Tarleton, said that a full review of areas of concern had been undertaken, including a road safety audit on the proposed junction with Leigh Road. Rawlinson added:

“Tarleton Estates is genuinely committed to delivering a high quality, sustainable development. It takes seriously its responsibilities to the local community, has regularly engaged with them for a number of years and will continue to do so.’

He concluded: “The site is fully deliverable, plays an important part in meeting Wigan Borough’s housing requirements and represents a highly sustainable location for residential development, avoiding the loss of Green Belt land. All statutory consultees are satisfied that the proposals are fully policy compliant and have raised no objections.” Wigan cannot demonstrate a five-year housing supply at present.

Disgraceful building on green belt is just the start of it, schools in the area are full to the brim, dentists and doctors too. The roads are clogged and no doubt this development will bring and extra 1000 cars to the area. Wigan uses the lovely town of Atherton as it’s cash cow, takes all the money from it and does not invest back into the area. Enough is enough!

Its not Green Belt.

Schools, dentists and doctors are always near capacity, as it makes no sense to have empty schools and medical professionals twiddling their thumbs waiting for new houses to be built.

It isn’t greenbelt, its safeguarded FOR development.

The junction to be created on Leigh Road, ant an already contested section, will only serve to make this an accident black spot for years to come. Just another situation of the council taking back handers from developers and not caring what the local community ( who have always been against this development) have to say. Hopefully it will come back and bite both developer and council in the years to come. Disgraceful attitude by Wigan Coucil
