Whitworth Street PRS tower takes shape

Plans have been revealed for a 37-storey residential tower in Whitworth Street West, opposite Development Securities' and Property Alliance Group's 27-storey Axis block in Manchester.

A planning application from property developer Brigantes is due to be submitted at the beginning of April. The building, designed by 5plus Architects, will include 330 apartments available for private rent, a bar, library, gym and rooftop garden.

The development site next to the City Road Inn is currently occupied by a warehouse, which would be demolished.

The Axis 172-apartment scheme, also designed by 5plus, was approved at the end of last year, and according to DevSec is already half sold.

Brigantes' proposals were unveiled at a public consultation event managed by Deloitte on Thursday 5 March.

The development is understood to be funded by overseas investors, with Brigantes planning to build, market and manage the scheme once complete.

In 2009 Dublin-based Ion Equity was granted permission to build a 280-bedroom hotel designed by HKR Architects. The plans were never progressed due to the recession.

Another bland addition to a bland cityscape.

Surely a quick look around Chorlton, where all Architects live, would inspire them to do something less glassy and more inspiring.

It’s interesting to see that this visual doesn’t show the Axis tower (by the same architect ) in the foreground. They will be very close to one another, so I wonder if there will be issues with wind at street level? Or if the only problem here will be a growing cluster of baby Beethams. By the way, not all architects live in Chorlton. Some are more discerning than that…

Most of us can’t afford Chorlton. Or these city centre towers.
