West Lancs goes back to drawing board with Local Plan

West Lancashire Council’s cabinet has decided to cease work on its Local Plan review with immediate effect to give the authority more time to consider further proposals.

As a result, the Local Plan preferred options, consulted on last autumn and set to guide the creation of a Local Plan to 2050, have effectively been withdrawn.

The council will now create a new Local Plan cabinet working group to start again on a 15-year plan for the borough. There is a Local Plan in place until 2027.

In a report to the cabinet, which met on Tuesday evening, John Harrison, director of development and regeration, said that a rewrite of the plan could potentially see less land removed from the Green Belt, more space available for employment, and a change in the annual number of homes proposed.

The new Local Plan will require a whole new evidence base, to establish the requirement for housing and employment land, and the most appropriate locations.

Cllr David Evans, portfolio holder for planning, said: “We have listened to feedback through the public consultation we held on the Local Plan Review proposals. The proposals have now been withdrawn to give us more time to consider the best way forward as we look to draw up a plan to give West Lancashire the best possible future.”
