Wates seeks to make most of foothold in Cumbria

Wates Construction, the contractor building BAE Systems’ Strategic Bulk Store in Barrow-in-Furness, said it plans to go after more work in Cumbria, targeting manufacturing, defence and pharmaceuticals projects.

Wates acquired a number of contracts and strategic framework positions from Shepherd Construction last year, including the SBS project and a principal position on BAE’s Systems Framework.

The growth plan forms part of the business’ plans to double turnover to £2bn and will build on Wates’ existing portfolio of North West based projects. These include Network Space’s Duke Street office in Liverpool and Stockport Council’s Redrock leisure development.

Wates’ team in the North West expanded by 50% in the final quarter of last year and currently stands at 120 staff across the region.

Tony Shenton, Wates’ North West director, said: “Our growth strategy will give rise to further investment in our teams and an extensive skills training plan will be a central part of our growth strategy as we look to create opportunities for local training and employment in Cumbria.”

Also forming part of Wates Group’s strategic growth plan, the business completed the acquisition of Shepherd Group’s SES Engineering Services and Shepherd FM in addition to a number of contracts and frameworks from Shepherd Construction in October last year.
