Wates completes extra care housing project

Wates Living Space has redeveloped an empty tower block in Charlestown, north Manchester into an extra care development for older residents.

The 16-storey Whitebeck Court on Moorway Drive, managed by Northwards Housing on behalf of Manchester City Council, underwent an £8.9m refurbishment programme. The tower now contains 91 extra care apartments partly funded by the Department of Health.

Whitebeck Court also boasts a 'sky lounge' on the top floor providing panoramic views of the city and beyond, a community centre on the ground floor providing services to residents and the local community, and is set within enclosed and safe landscaped gardens.

Steve Jackson, business unit director for Wates Living Space, said: "This is a very important extra care development for North Manchester and nationally and one which we have been privileged to work on. It is always extremely rewarding to be involved in a project that will improve the lives of those who really need help and support."

Pat Scappaticci, head of retirement housing and caretaking services at Northwards Housing, added: "It has been great to see how work has progressed and to such an impressive standard. This is a fantastic project and older people living in North Manchester now have another great housing option coming their way. It will be a wonderful place to live and exciting for those who'll be working there."

Additional development attributes include emergency call provision, assistive technology installation, energy efficient glazing and lighting, photovoltaic panels, ICT suite, a therapy room, and a waste and recycling centre.
