Warrington car bunker tipped for consent
Duncan Cameron, the co-founder of MoneySuperMarket, is behind plans to create an underground facility at Stretton Airfield to store his personal collection of vehicles.
Warrington Council is due to consider the proposals when its development control committee meets later this week. Planning officers have recommended the project be approved.
Designed by Jeffrey Bell Architects, the scheme is a scaled-back version of a previous proposal from 2018 that included a six-bedroom house.
The house no longer forms part of the plan and Cameron, who sold his stake in MoneySuperMarket in 2007, is seeking permission only for the underground car storage facility, which could accommodate up to 68 vehicles.
The facility would be accessed via a ramp running parallel to the airfield’s former runway.
As well as the circular subterranean storage area, the proposals feature a small above-ground structure for additional storage.
Located in the Green Belt off Cowley Lane, the scheme has been “devised to ensure that there will be minimal impact on the openness of the surrounding Green Belt and to ensure that the proposals will be a highly sustainable form of development”, according to a planning statement by Iceni Projects.
