Views sought on 4,000-home Stockport masterplan as first images released
A vision outlining plans for thousands of homes, a replacement for Stepping Hill Hospital, and a new school across 280 acres in the east of the town centre has been published.
Stockport Council and Stockport Mayoral Development Corportation are seeking feedback on the strategic regeneration framework, drafted by CBRE, with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, CW Studio, and Hydrock.
The masterplan lays out a vision for at least 4,000 new homes “to suit all lifestyles and budgets” as well as a new school and town centre hospital.
Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation’s Town Centre East vision, which stretches eastwards from Wellington Road North to St Mary’s Way and northwards from Hempshaw Lane to the M60, forms part of a wider £1bn transformation programme.
The area will be split across three distinct neighbourhoods:
- Goyt Riverside
- Higher Hillgate
- Historic and Civic Heart

The SRF for the east of the town centre aims to build on the success of the 130-acre Town Centre West over the last five years.
Projects delivered and emerging within Town Centre West since it was established in 2019 include the revamped Stockport Interchange, Capital&Centric’s Wier Mill, the 170,000 sq ft Stockport Exchange office development, and Stockport 8 – a 1,200-home scheme being delivered by ECF.
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “The first five years of Stockport’s Mayoral Development Corporation show what’s possible when we put place and people first.
“Together, we’ve transformed Town Centre West…but we’re just getting started.”
While the plans for town centre east centre around housing, Stockport Council Leader Cllr Mark Hunter said the scheme is not solely living focussed.
“This is about more than housing—it’s about creating greener spaces, stronger communities, and a town centre that works for everyone,” he said.
“With a focus on sustainability, wellbeing, and inclusive growth, we’re building a place where people want to live, work and thrive.”
The consultation will run until 26 June.

Looks like an excellent plan! Get it built

Stockport is the place to be. The rest of Greater Manchester’s commuter towns should follow suit and deliver what the city centre cannot.

Just get them all going it will look better

Road infrastructure around Stockport would struggle to cope with more homes, it’s hard enough trying to travel through Stockport in rush hour.

Is stepping hill hospital going then and where is it going

Shouldn’t they be spending their energies on getting a new Local Plan adopted instead?

Having moved the infirmary to Stepping Hill are we now going to build a new hospital in the town centre? I know, maybe close our treasured Library which nobody wants to create a new hospital with zero parking?

OMG suggest they take a tour of the high rise slums already built

100% We urgently need a new hospital ASAP and obviously need more housing.

A new hospital should be built on the old British Aerospace site at Woodford there is loads of land available the last place you want it is in the town centre as it will gave the same problem as stepping hill,no room for expansion.

Nice if built for local people

I remember the old estates long demolished and the coal yard before grand Central and the massive cooling towers and gas works in Port Wood some people don’t get those days..they now see Stockport as a top destination..but sadly its turning into Croydon which is London version of the Manchester metro of Stockport..sorry but if you don’t like it move to my town of Wilmslow nice here

Higher Hillgate is a jumble of old decaying shop fronts and delapidated buildings it really needs demolishing
By Derek Kay
We need a shopping centre people wish to visit and a town to be proud of. Stockport has fallen so far under Lib Dems and Labour more shops closed than open.

So just a 2025 version of Brinnington?

I agree Stepping Hill Hospital either needs a full revamp or a new hospital built. I am under the impression that the old Debenhams building is proposed but it appears totally unsuitable sizewise as our communities are expanding and there is not enough parking. This is a major problem now at SHH.

Looks all very lovely, but how many years will this take. We are lucky that we have a town centre with many ancient features. The inside market is buzzing now but we are so short of some really nice shops in the centre. Good news we have sostrene gre ne coming to town

If only CGI images translated to reality. Meadow Mill advertised trees and green areas at the front of the building this has not transpired! The town centre could have been transformed into a green pleasent area to shop and have a coffee, instead a few concrete planters through the centre ! Come on planning follow through with your pretty pictures

Nothing you can do to pretty up a dirty hole of a town. This just brings more congestion and expense to tax payers. Put it in the bin.

We need a decent shopping centre not just flats everywhere

@john Davies. The idea of building a hospital on the outskirts of the town is crazy as well as idiotic. Many healthcare professionals don’t agree with the alleged move to the town centre, this is purely a council idea and many of the healthcare professionals believe stepping hill is the best location providing many of the existing buildings are replaced as they are now longer fit for purpose.

Build a new hospital at Woodford. At the age of 85 I have to take a taxi to Stepping Hill. How the hell will I get to Woodford. Maybe the idea is to get rid of old uns.
