VIDEO | River Medlock winds through Mayfield Park
A 365-metre stretch of the River Medlock can be found at the site, currently being transformed into Manchester’s first new park in 100 years.
Drone footage shot by Danny Williams follows the river as it makes its way through the construction site near Piccadilly Station. You can spot the starting of wetland planting, the rocks being used to both break up the river and help oxygenate it, and diggers getting an area ready for wildscaping.
Coming soon to the park is a collection 140 mature trees, including 12-metre tall Austrian Black Pines. The trees were grown across Europe and arrived in the UK earlier this month. They’re being nurtured by Specimen Trees in Knutsford and will be relocated to the park later this autumn.
Mayfield Park is set to open in autumn 2022.
The park is a key part of the wider 24-acre Mayfield development from the Mayfield Partnership, a public-private venture between regeneration specialist U+I, Manchester City Council, developer LCR and Transport for Greater Manchester.
When complete, Mayfield will boast 1,500 new homes, 1.6m sq ft of offices, 300,000 sq ft of retail and leisure facilities, and 11 acres of public realm.
The project team for Mayfield Park includes construction firm PP O’Connor, lead designer and structural engineer Civic Engineers, landscape architect Gillespies, architect Studio Egret West, and river engineer Buro Happold.
