UoL cancels double refurb
The Derby and Hartley buildings had been in line for redevelopment for use by the University of Liverpool’s school of environmental sciences but their future is now up in the air.
Work to refurbish and develop the Brownlow Street buildings had begun after planning permission for the project was granted in 2023. However, that project has now been paused while the university refreshes its estates strategy.
A University of Liverpool spokesperson told Place: “The University is completing work to make the buildings wind and watertight.
“We are in the process of realigning our Estates Strategy and development priorities with our strategic framework, Liverpool 2031.
“As part of this, we are considering a number of alternative uses for the buildings that will facilitate our vision for a sustainable, world class campus experience to underpin our teaching, research and impact activities and the achievement of our strategic goals.”
Architect Sheppard Robson and planner Stantec led the professional team for the project, supported by AA Projects, Assent, Booth King, BCA Landscapes, Cundall, Dunbar Boardman, Enzygo, Futureserv, Jensen Hughes, MAC, ORSA Projects and Rob Burns.
The university’s construction business was the main contractor.

And….?

IIRC this was originally meant for EEE to move in due to its close proximity to the school of engineering, and digital innovation factory next door. The existing EEE building would have been knocked down and land used for the Harold Cohen library extension.
At some point it was switched to school of environmental sciences so they’d be in a single building. Logical, but the university desperately needs more library capacity and it’s unclear how this would be solved, since EEE would still occupy the space the extension was planned for.
Meanwhile the EEE building is half refurbished, with some floors refreshed (e.g. 1st and 4th) and others untouched.

The uni of Liverpool needs to offer more of the courses that create industry.. we don’t need more lawyers.. earth sciences.. biological.. medical.. arts industries need huge investments if the future games hubs and film studios are to thrive.. they should stop trying to provide a course for every wish and want.
