University of Manchester picks Carillion at Owens Park

The University of Manchester has selected Carillion as the preferred bidder to design and build the £75m first phase of its Fallowfield Student Residences project at Owens Park.

This phase of development consists of 1,122 cluster-flat study bedrooms arranged in eight accommodation blocks, along with an energy centre, student amenity hub and associated landscaping.

It is the first element of a three-phase programme to overhaul the residential part of the Owens Park site, which houses 3,251 students along with central university functions such as catering and site maintenance.

Abu Dhabi investor Mubadala Development Company was selected in 2014 for the whole scheme, which is now projected at £245m, but left the project last year by mutual consent, triggering a new procurement process.

The blocks are typically four-storey residential units in various configurations, typically comprising ten bedrooms and a kitchen area on each floor. Carillion will develop final design and construction proposals, ahead of contracts being signed and construction starting in August, with completion scheduled for summer 2019.

Carillion chief executive Richard Howson, said: “Being selected for this project reflects our reputation for delivering to high-standards of quality and Health and Safety and our ability to design and deliver sustainable solutions for our customers.

“We look forward to working with the University to deliver Phase one of the Fallowfield Student Residences project to support its objective of providing an excellent student experience.”
