Two step up as Story Contracting plots succession

Jason Butterworth will become vice-chair, with Andy Joy stepping into his old role as chief executive as the Carlisle-headquartered firm plans further growth.

Story Contracting has become a £200m turnover business in the six years since Butterworth became chief executive , taking the reins at a firm that was at that time recording sales of £70m a year.

The firm said that is looking for further growth, with opportunities for its rail divisions provided by Capital Programmes 7 and 8, along with work for new and existing clients in construction and plant and the possibility of joint ventures and further diversification.

Butterworth will take up the vice-chair role from 1 April  2023, with Joy changing role on the same day. His recruitment to Story in 2021 was made with the succession plan in mind, following a successful career at Amey’s £400m rail business.

The company said that Butterworth will continue in a hands-on role with existing clients, “ensuring we strive to deliver high quality, collaborative projects across the UK, as well as working closely with the board on future investment, diversification plans and strategic direction”.

Chairman Fred Story said: “This is a really exciting time for the business, and as we celebrate our 35th anniversary , I am delighted that Jason has agreed to take on this role to support the board with investment decisions, the diversification strategy, our major frameworks, and helping me to ensure we achieve sustainable growth across the regions.”
