Trident Gym takes 19,000 sq ft at Urban Splash’s Matchbox

The fitness chain has chosen Liverpool as the location for its first Northern venue.

South West-based Trident Gym has signed a 15-year lease at Urban Splash’s Matchbox, part of the wider Matchworks estate in South Liverpool.

Trident, which also has sites in Plymouth, Weston-Super-Mare, and Bridgewater, has become the third gym operator to take residence in Matchbox since Urban Splash bought the building in 2000.

Fit4Free moved in in 2011 before 24/7 Fitness replaced the company in 2017. The latter closed its doors earlier this year citing the financial impact of Covid.

Now, Matchbox will be a gym once more with Trident poised to move in. The lease will generate £2m for landlord Urban Splash over its full term.

The gym will be open 24 hours a day and feature everything you would typically expect from a commercial gym as well as a sauna and a cryotherapy chamber.

Craig Stephens, owner of Trident said: “We’re thrilled to be opening our first North West gym and bringing the Trident brand to Liverpool.

“Matchworks is a brilliant location, with an established business community and strong transport links. We can’t wait to welcome local people through our doors.”

Nicky Harries, commercial manager at Urban Splash, said: “The health and wellness sector is continuing to grow, and we’re pleased to support that growth by providing well-designed, adaptable spaces where these businesses – and their communities – can thrive.”
