Torus advances pair of affordable Wigan schemes

The housebuilder, working with Homes England, has started work on a £10m scheme in Leigh and submitted plans for a £26m project in Standish.

Both developments are on former industrial sites, with the Leigh scheme set to deliver 87 homes at Plank Lane in a project aimed at the over-55s.

In Standish, the Hallbrook Gardens project will comprise 155 homes, offering a mix of shared ownership, affordable rent and some homes available through the Government’s Rent to Buy scheme. Work is expected to start later this year.

Director of development and sales Steve Alcock, said: “The impact Covid-19 has had on communities across the North West means that the demand for genuinely affordable housing options has never been more acute.

“As a result, we’ve extended our reach, unlocking land and redevelopment opportunities beyond our traditional heartlands of Liverpool, St Helens and Warrington.

“Not only does this widen the housing choice, it also provides security for local supply chains, creates jobs and gives the economy a much-needed boost.”

Alcock continued: “Working in partnership with Homes England, we have been able to redevelop land in Wigan which was previously undeliverable, and these two schemes will see us create more than 240 affordable homes in the area in the coming years.”

Torus is currently developing more than 2,000 homes in ten local authority areas across the North West.

The company hit the headlines last month in unveiling a project at Liverpool FC’s former training ground Melwood, where it will deliver 200 homes alongside a football academy.

The group is also in talks with Everton FC about delivering housing as part of the Goodison Park Legacy project.
