Tilbury Douglas lands £16m Aintree Hospital contract

A two-storey extension to the Liverpool hospital’s emergency department is being built, as well as new hybrid operating theatres. A new CT scanner, increased capacity for ambulance drop-off bays and the refurbishment of the existing theatre complex are also part of the project.

The Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said that the scheme will reduce wait times and enable the hospital to provide better care for patients. Currently, Aintree Hospital is the home of the Cheshire and Merseyside Major Trauma Centre, which sees more than 89,000 patients a year and services a catchment area of 2.3m people.

Work has already begun on site and is expected to complete in 2023.

“I’m delighted that work has started on this project, which is an important part of our strategy to provide outstanding healthcare for the people of Liverpool,” said Sir David Dalton, interim chief executive of Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

“This expansion will improve the delivery of high-quality emergency care and forms part of a major investment at our Aintree site to improve our facilities and infrastructure, ultimately ensuring patients get access to the right expertise as efficiently as possible.”

IBI Design Group and Sutcliffe Civil and Structural Engineers are working with Tilbury Douglas on the scheme.

Phil Shaw, divisional director for the North West at Tilbury Douglas, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver this exciting development that will enhance patient care. The contract award builds on the team’s excellent track record of working on complex developments across the North West, including at the neighbouring Walton Centre, the UK’s only dedicated neurosciences Trust, delivering the Sid Watkins Building and iMRI Suite.”

In addition to the emergency department extension, Aintree is having its 125-foot tower block renovated. Work on that project began in 2020, with construction firm Bam completing the first phase in 2021. The entire £22.5m scheme is expected to finish this summer.
