Tilbury Douglas completes GMIoT in Salford
Located at the Peel Park campus, the 20,000 sq ft Greater Manchester Institute of Technology building will be used as a central hub by colleges working with the university.
The £14.3m GMIoT building is the latest in the University of Salford’s Campus Connectivity Plan projects to be delivered.
Work started in autumn 2024 after Tilbury Douglas won the project that September, with a steel signing ceremony held as construction gathered pace last May.
Students will use it for higher-level, real world technical education and training in sectors including construction, engineering, computing, creative media, business and health sciences.
JM Architects designed the building, which was completed on budget and on time. The low carbon structure features a green roof with photovoltaic panels to generate renewable energy, alongside a green living wall supported by rainwater harvesting.
Facilities include flexible digital labs, a prototyping workshop and ICT studios.
Martin Horne, regional director at Tilbury Douglas, said: “We are incredibly proud to have partnered with the University of Salford on the delivery of the new GMIoT building.
“This high-quality, sustainable facility will help to equip students across Greater Manchester with the skills and confidence needed to access meaningful careers, including in construction. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with the University and GMIoT stakeholder partners to bring this vision to life.”
Jo Purves, pro vice-chancellor partnerships and global engagement at the University of Salford, said: “The facility has been beautifully delivered by Tilbury Douglas and envisioned by Jm architects who have created a place which not only meets the highest education standards but is welcoming and accessible for all.”
Other recent Tilbury Douglas projects include work at Stepping Hill hospital in Stockport, Halifax Leisure Centre and the transformation of Oldham Old Library.
