Thumbs up for £22m Nelson shopping centre revamp

Pendle Council has approved plans to demolish Pendle Rise and build a condensed retail complex in its place. 

Penbrook Development, the joint venture between Pendle Council and developer Brookhouse, wants to flatten the existing 106,000 sq ft Nelson shopping centre and replace it with a more modest 55,000 sq ft scheme. 

The £22m development would comprise a 21,000 sq ft food store, and nine retail units ranging from 1,000 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft.  

Designed by Urban Edge Architecture, the project also features 143 parking spaces.  

The former multi-storey car park adjacent to the shopping centre has recently been cleared and redeveloped as a Mcdonald’s.  

Pegasus Group is advising Penbrook on planning matters.

The redevelopment of Pendle Rise is the anchor project of Nelson’s £25m Town Deal and follows a period of public consultation.  

The joint venture between the council and Brookhouse also plans to invest £12m in the project. 

The council announced last year its intention to acquire the shopping centre and remains locked in negotiations to acquire Pendle Rise from Future Properties.

We certainly need some famous stores Primark where there’s something for everyone. Sports shop. Shoe shop Aldi a food hall with fish monger deli cheese cooked meats Nice bakery shop . Costa or Starbucks

Pendle Rise is too old, scruffy n big. Times have changed and business’s need to be sure of a decent footfall to achieve enough turnover to pay high running costs. So whilst the new proposal may be smaller its the best way forward. I hope Nelson attracts some quality shops and I wish it well. But developers take note, our population is aging faster than ever before PLEASE can we have some decent seating areas both inside n outside the new development for elderly, parents with children, the disabled n simply anyone who needs a quick break.

Please stop throwing good money at the moribund lifeless slob that Nelson has long since become. The new demographics cannot possibly support a reintroduction of former glories. End.

Small towns have suffered because of the out of town shopping ma!ls, where you can buy everything in one place, Nelson would
need some popular high street shops to compete also good parking. Even city high streets struggle now because more people shop online. Suggestions for bakerys and cheese stalls won’t work anymore. Oddies closed their Arndale shop . We had all that in the 70 but people prefer to go to supermarkets,.to save time. Most mum’s work these days and cannot afford the time to go from shop to shop.

What a pity the lovely old buildings of Nelson were allowed to be demolished to build the eyesore of today. Hopefully more thought will be put into the new development. Is it just throwing good money after bad!! Let’s wait and see.

So what happens to all the small businesses that are left in there now? With only 9 retail units available, larger chain stores are going to get them, small businesses won’t need that much space! If the rents weren’t so high more shops may have stayed and not made the town so dead.
And changing how the town looks sadly doesn’t change the people within it,
