Third time lucky, New Anfield plans approved again, as…

Liverpool FC has been granted planning permission for the third time to build a new stadium in Stanley Park, Anfield.

The approved plans cover a 60,000-seat stadium, a Community Partnership Centre, club shop and museum, conference and banqueting facilities, as well as parking for 970 vehicles. The design allows for later extensions to take the capacity up to 73,000 seats.

Outline consent was also reinstated for the Anfield Plaza scheme on the site of the current stadium, where detailed plans will follow for a hotel and park.

The revised application was submitted after new American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks called for a less expensive stadium with a 25% smaller footprint. The new design by HKR leaves an additional 0.89 acre of open space around the stadium.

A statement from Liverpool FC said: "The multi-use games areas and tennis courts associated with the Community Partnership Centre are now on a deck over part of the car park on the North side of the stadium with a living wall of plants facing Priory Road, reducing the amount of excavation.

"Restoration of Stanley Park and the Isla Gladstone Conservatory are now well underway and are scheduled for completion this winter.

"The Club is committed to take the stadium project forward and start on site as soon as possible and aim for an opening for the 2011/2012 season."

The original design was approved in 2004. Earlier this year, Hicks and Gillett secured a £350m refinancing arrangement, including £60m for work on site to begin.
