THING OF THE WEEK
PADEL READIES FOR WINTER… Great Jackson Street is known from a distance for its towers, but its early-morning commuters will note that even on the frostiest of mornings, Club de Padel is alive with players. As winter descends, regular 6am attendance is likely to decline, but excuses for missing the early morning session may soon run out of road. Manchester’s first indoor padel offer, Pure Padel, has opened at Dutton Street – padel players can now play with warm fingers at the facility, which is complete with the athlete’s essentials: a ‘pro padel shop’, fully equipped changing rooms, a bistro-style cafe, and of course, a fully licensed bar. St Helens has jumped on the trend too, Wigan-based Soul Padel will take the sport’s first steps toward Merseyside.

HOT STUFF… Need some relaxation after your padel workout? Welcome to the North West’s latest obsession – the ice bath/sauna complex. Wyld Sauna, a much-anticipated floating sauna has arrived in Liverpool, with booking open starting today. The sauna lets you take a dunk at Princes Dock, steam up in a 30-person sauna, or regret your life decisions by hopping in four ice baths. Not to be left out, Manchester has plans for its own sauna and ice bath facility. The Good Sauna is opening later this month at New Jackson, for those who prefer the skyscraper view.
SWEAT-WORKING… Continuing our health theme, there is now a Liverpool Property and Construction running group. The networking fitness club is the creation of the industrial Lucy O’Connor of Galliford Try, Chris Jones of ION Development, and Adam Leary of WSP. The trio has big plans for the group – if you’re interested in joining, hit them up on LinkedIn.
TRAM STARS… MTV has given St Peters Square’s tram stop in Manchester a makeover, courtesy of the upcoming MTV EMAs at Co-Op Live on Sunday. “You Only Love Me” singer Rita Ora is also taking the mic for the Metrolink announcements, where she’ll guide commuters “Anywhere”. We’re in good hands with Ora, after all, she has promised “I will never let you down”. To keep you on your toes, she’ll also be declaring a “Best Dressed Award” winner over the loudspeaker (spoiler, it’s always the gent in the back).
MOVE OVER BINGO… Bookmaker Betfred announced its latest gamble, a studio and live presenters for its numbers game ‘Nifty 50’. The purpose-built studio at Betfred’s head office in Warrington will host five live draws a day – punters could win the £5m jackpot by tuning in at Betfred’s shops or online. Head honcho at Betfred, Fred Done, dangled the carrot in front of gamblers, suggesting all he wants is for players to “win big with small stakes”.
