TfGM completes £1.4m deal with Easynet

Easynet Global Services has signed a five year agreement worth £1.4m with Transport for Greater Manchester to provide an improved information network.

Easynet plans a fully managed ADSL network that will improve congestion and safety across Greater Manchester.

The company aims to improve the efficiency of traffic signals, variable message signs, processes for monitoring road usage and journey times, by providing an internet protocol network.

The new network will help TfGM to unify its traffic management and roadside intelligent transport system infrastructure into one single platform.

Easynet said the new system will help the local authority to lower pollution levels in and around the city and is expected to reduce TfGM's operational costs by £300,000 a year.

David Rowe, chief executive of Easynet Global Services, said: "This project is all about using technology to add value and save money at the same time. At the heart of the project is technical innovation to enable TfGM to closely monitor and respond to real-time changes in traffic levels and the chance to make a real change to the community of Greater Manchester Easynet has significant experience working within the transport sector as well as the public sector in general."

David Hytch, information systems director for TfGM, added: "Our existing relationship with Easynet, along with its experience within the transport sector, makes it the ideal partner to work on this project. TfGM is focussed on providing better services for the road user and best value for Greater Manchester. With Easynet's participation, we'll give Greater Manchester a safer, more reliable highway network for pedestrians, motorists and businesses alike to enable economic growth and sustainable mobility."

Easynet carried out a similar implementation for Transport for London, to connect CCTV and congestion charging systems, and a previous project for TfGM to enable connectivity to bus shelters for CCTV monitoring of anti-social behaviour.
