Taylor Wimpey prepares to start on Ashton homes

The housebuilder said construction will start in the coming months for 195 homes on the site of the former Hartshead High School in Ashton-under-Lyne, after gaining approval at Tameside planning committee.

Ground remediation work on the 15-acre site has started ahead of building the 189 homes and small apartment block. There will be 15% affordable housing provision, representing 30 homes.

The application for the site off Greenhurst Road, went to committee in December last year, but amendments have since been made to increase the site’s recreational space, and required an additional application.

Hartshead High School merged with Stamford High School in September 2008 and occupied a new building on Broadoak Road. All that is left on the site is the concrete foundation slab and tarmac areas along with the playing fields.

Liz Percival, assistant land manager at Taylor Wimpey Manchester, said: “We received unanimous support from the committee for our proposed scheme. The site is a key asset in the local authority and we look forward to delivering more homes in Ashton-under-Lyne.”

Louisa Fielden, senior planner at Avison Young in Manchester, advising Taylor Wimpey, said: “The homes and apartments will complement the existing residential development adjacent to the site and we’ve worked with officers at Tameside Council to create a high-quality scheme that will deliver much-needed housing to the area.”

Baldwin Design Consultancy is the architect.
