Tara Properties’ leisure centre to make way for housing

Tara Properties has submitted an outline planning application to Oldham Council to bulldoze the only leisure centre in Shaw, Oldham, and replace it with 46 apartments and 14 town houses.

Bosses at the property company, which also owns the Tara Sports and Leisure Centre, have organised an exhibition at the Grains Road site's function suite tomorrow to showcase the plans. The one and two bedroom, two-and-a-half storeys high apartments, will be located at the back of the site, with the two-storey mix of two and three bedroom terrace houses fronting Grains Road. Car parking is also included in the plan.

A statement from the owners said: "The leisure business operating from the site has been in decline for a number of years and is unlikely to continue operating in the foreseeable future.

"The buildings are in need of maintenance and there are high costs involved in bringing them up to modern standards."
