Tameside triggers next stage of Stalybridge regen

Proposals have been lodged for a 171-space multi-storey car park on Waterloo Road, a move that follows an application for a new footbridge over the River Tame.

Designed by TODD Architects, the new building will replace existing surface parking, and is intended to mirror neighbouring buildings. It lies to the north-east of Stalybridge’s railway station, just off the Stamford Street A road.

AshtonHale is the planning consultant, with the team also including landscape architect LDA Design, ecology expert JCA, flood assessor LK Group, transport consultant PJA. Heyne Tillett Steel, Donald Insall, Innov8ds, iM2, and Troup Bywater & Anders

Tameside was awarded £19.9m by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities in March 2023 for “essential infrastructure” underpinning town centre regeneration plans – by freeing up surface parking areas, the MSCP project is intended as an enabler of commercial and residential development in Stalybridge West.

The facility, which will have four parking levels including the roof, will include:

  • 151 standard spaces
  • 13 accessible spaces for people with disabilities
  • Four electric vehicle charging spaces
  • Motorcycle parking

The structure will reach 12.81m at its highest point, lower than the adjacent Old Fire Station.

The proposal includes upgrades around the site including a new pedestrian route along King Street leading directly to the car park entrance, better links to Stalybridge Clinic and Waterloo Road, new trees, planting, walls and railings.

There is also a public realm improvement works programme live, which started at the beginning of February.

Cllr Andrew McLaren, Tameside’s deputy leader for growth, housing and homelessness, said: “With the footbridge application already submitted and the car park application now progressing, we’re delivering improvements that will make it easier to get around the town.

“Together with the upcoming work at Armentieres Square, the Old Town Hall Gardens, Trinity Street, and other key projects on, this will support new housing and help Stalybridge grow as a vibrant and welcoming place.”

The MSCP scheme is part of the wider Stalybridge Capital Regeneration Programme, which aims to improve public spaces, strengthen transport links and create a more connected town centre.

All documents relating to the project can be seen on Tameside Council’s planning porital with the reference 26/00084/FUL.

What an absolute farce! The town is crumbling at the seams and the answer is a multi storey
carpark! As a previous comment said, what do
we needmore car parking space for, sorry i just
thought, so we can all leave our cars, get on the
train and go to Manchester. That will do a world
of good for our town. Put the investment into our yoing people, they have got nothing!
