Stockley to become Civic Engineers

Structural and civil engineering practice Stockley will change its name to Civic Engineers from Monday 2 September.

Civic Engineers employs 16-strong people across two offices in Manchester and London. The name change reflects the departure earlier this year of Martin Stockley from the business, now managed by Julian Broster and Stephen O'Malley.

Stephen O' Malley said: "Becoming Civic Engineers is more than just adopting a new name and logo, it's a clear reflection on how we approach our service by putting people's needs at the centre of everything.

"The definition of civic is 'of the city and its people', and this aligns directly with our approach, whether designing or adapting buildings, waterways, streets and other urban infrastructure. We aim to place the community at the heart of the process as this brings big benefits for both the neighbourhoods and the commercial interests of the project sponsors.

"This more holistic methodology is a direct reference back to the founding principles of our profession, and is deliberate move against the current segregation and specialisation of the industry."

Current work on the practice's order books includes projects in London's Hackney Wick and Olympic Park together with enhancements to Oldham and Altrincham town centres.

In addition Civic Engineers have been recently appointed to lead an inter-disciplinary project on the Flintshire coast taking in the conurbations of Queensferry, Connah's Quay and Shotton.

O'Malley said the new name reinforced the people-centred philosophy of the founders which has been clearly demonstrated recently through their public realm traffic management work to boost retail in Poynton in South Manchester which helped the project win a CIHT Award this year. Poynton was also recently presented as a best practice case study at a special shared spaces event in London which was organised by CABE – Design Council.
