Steel to move to Select Property Group

Michele Steel, head of Deloitte Real Estate in the North West, is to move client-side, joining Cheshire-based Select Property Group next month as director of strategic planning.

Steel was named Deloitte Real Estate’s regional head at the beginning of 2014 when she took over from partner Simon Bedford after he moved into a development consultancy role. She is also director in the planning team.

She worked at Deloitte Real Estate and its predecessor, Drivers Jonas, for 16 years and played a key role in the integration of Drivers Jonas with Deloitte in 2010.

At Select Property Group, she will oversee the planning stages of the entire Select portfolio, which includes the Vita Student, CitySuites and Affinity Living brands in the UK and overseas. Deloitte has acted as planning adviser to Select on several schemes.

According to a statement from Deloitte Real Estate, there are no plans to replace Steel: “Going forward, Peter Wilkinson, partner lead for the regional business, will take a more active leadership role in Manchester, working alongside partner Simon Bedford and Sean Beech, head of Deloitte Real Estate’s regional business, and director John Cooper, leading the planning team in the North West.”

Select Property Group is currently in the planning stages for a range of Affinity Living schemes in Manchester, the company’s private rented sector brand. This includes 677 apartments on the former BBC site on Oxford Road, now called Circle Square; 506 apartments at Riverside and Riverview next to the Lowry Hotel, and 694 apartments at Embankment West. This forms part of Salford Council’s Greengate regeneration scheme and features Select’s 280 unit CitySuites development.

After receiving planning permission in January, Select is currently on site with 604 Vita Student flats at Circle Square.

Mark Stott, chief executive of Select, said: “Michele’s unparalleled knowledge and expertise of the planning landscape will be a huge asset to the business. She will be intrinsic to the future of Select’s development and we’re very much looking forward to her joining the team.”

Select is based in Alderley Edge. Other high-profile figures at the company include Ken Knott, founder of Ask Real Estate, who joined Select in 2014 as director of the Vita student accommodation arm. Select was founded by chief executive Mark Stott in 2004.
