Stantec grows Manchester office to accommodate Hydrock

The multidisciplinary practice now occupies 15,500 sq ft at 100 Barbirolli Square, increasing its presence in AEW Investors’ building by 5,500 sq ft.

Engineering design firm Hydrock was acquired by Stantec in May. Its 85 Manchester staff will move from Northern Assurance Buildings and another site in Hale to 100 Barbirolli, where Stantec consolidated earlier this year.

Stantec now occupies the entire seventh floor of the 155,000 sq ft building.

100 Barbirolli is one of more than 50 Stantec offices in the UK and Ireland, which provide bases for 4,000 staff. In the North, the business has offices in Manchester, Warrington, Leeds, and Newcastle.

The firm, which offers engineering, architecture, environmental consulting, and planning – following the acquisition of Barton Wilmore in 2023 – counts local authorities, developers, housebuilders, energy operators, landowners, and water companies among its clients.

“As we approach our tenth year of operation in Manchester, we’re proud that every one of our service offerings is available across the North West,” said Danny Hope, Hydrock, now Stantec’s regional director for the North West.

“From civil, structural, and mechanical engineering specialists to fire safety, transport planning, energy and sustainability services professionals, the number of team members we have in this region has more than quadrupled over the last six years.”

Hope added that the move into 100 Barbirolli aligns with the company’s growth ambitions.

“As we’ve grown as a business, and since joining the Stantec family, it was time we moved into a modern, creative and aspirational space like this,” he said.

“Our new office is reflective of our capabilities and long-standing industry reputation. We’re already taking advantage of working with our new colleagues to leverage our shared expertise, unlocking complex sites to create high-performing, future-proofed buildings and infrastructure across the country.”

Bernard Greep, Stantec’s director of planning and growth, is the consultancy’s Manchester office lead.

He added: “As a people-driven and purpose-focused business, the integration of colleagues from Hydrock, now Stantec serves as an important milestone in our North West journey.

“With their complementary buildings and energy service lines combined with our extensive background in planning and development, we’re perfectly positioned across many sectors to support our clients with their development and resilience challenges.”

Claremont conducted the fit-out.

Richard Turner, director at Claremont, added: “Over the past five years, we’ve collaborated with Stantec on numerous projects across the UK, from Warrington to Leeds, Edinburgh, and beyond.

“[In Manchester we have created] a vibrant space that unites their teams and reflects the city’s unique character. Our shared vision has consistently delivered workspaces that blend functionality with local design inspiration, whether it’s Yorkshire landscapes in Leeds or Manchester’s iconic worker bee.”
