Southway lines up Sale project
Plans have been submitted to demolish Sale Masonic Hall and replace it with 29 apartments.
Nexus Planning is representing Southway Housing Trust on the scheme, which is billed as intending to deliver a fully affordable scheme for young families on a key brownfield site within the town centre, with all apartments to be offered as shared ownership.
The application is for 18 two-bedroom apartments and 11 one-bedroom apartments across four storeys.
The Tatton Road site is just shy of 11,000 sq ft, and currently houses the three-storey brick former Masonic Hall. The site is bound by the local police station and Railway pub.
Nexus’ covering letter with the application states that the projected building will be lower in height than the existing hall, with the top floor being recessed back from the Tatton Road frontage. The design is intended to appear as a series of townhouses.
JDA Architects has designed the scheme, with the professional team also including Redmore Environmental, RoC Consulting, e3p, Integra and Aval. An earlier iteration of the scheme designed by Kitson Architecture didn’t advance to the application stage.
Southway is currently delivering a 106-unit social rent extra-care housing for over 55s. The £14.5m project is being constructed by Rowlinson and was designed by Pozzoni Architecture.
Will be interesting to see the plans for this project, the existing building is an eyesore. I hope the proposed building is in keeping with the area and the lovely terrace houses opposite. At present there is limited on-street parking, although you would expect residents to be getting the Metro into town with the Sale station being 2 minutes walk away.

Great to see investment in Sale and the provision of affordable housing. On a personal note though: where will Sale Beer Festival be held now?!
