South Ribble high school reset passes planning test

Penwortham Girls High School’s more than 800 pupils will be relocated roughly 320 ft south to an L-shaped, three-storey block to be constructed by Bowmer + Kirkland.

A 71,000 sq ft replacement school designed by Pick Everard will be built on the 14-acre site, while upgrades to external areas and sports pitches will be coordinated by One-Environments.

DDP Planning was the agent for the recently approved application put forward by the Department for Education on Penwortham Girls High School’s behalf.

The school teaches pupils between the ages of 11-16 and is found to the southwest of Preston city centre, within the borders of South Ribble Council.

An assembly hall and a sports hall will feature on the school’s ground floor, as well as a reception, gym, activity studio, and dining hall.

Staff rooms, classrooms, and meeting rooms are also part of the ground floor plans.

The first floor will provide further teaching spaces, a second sports hall and activity studio, and a library.

The second floor will predominantly host classrooms and offices.

An existing playing field and an external multi-use games area will remain to be used by the newly constructed facility.

Parking bays will serve up to 85 cars, with 30 designated cycle spaces.

The existing school building to the north of the application site has stood since the 1950s.

Pupils will remain at this site until construction on the replacement school has been completed.

The project team includes Alan Wood Partnership, Arup, Ramboll, SpaceZero, StonyRock, Ashton Fire, 2PSolutions, and Chord Consult.
