Smith McHugh becomes Smith Young
Liverpool-based practice Smith McHugh Architecture, formerly McHugh Stoppard, has changed its name again to reflect the latest generation of directors.
The firm is now practicing as Smith Young, led by directors Daniel Smith and Michael Young. Steven McHugh and David Stoppard have retired from the practice.
Current workload at Smith Young includes the recently approved Grafton Street apartments for a private developer and the completion of the former watchmakers building on Seel Street.
Michael Young said: “The whole team has been working tremendously hard over the last two years to grow and develop the practice to a level that allows us to work across a number of sectors and a variety of scales and we are finally seeing that hard work pay divides for our loyal client base. Whilst the scale of our projects has grown in parallel with the practice we are very conscious that the quality of the architecture always comes first, its sounds like a cliché but we treat every project equally whether we are designing a reception desk or master planning part of a city.”
Smith Young are based on Hope Street. The practice was originally founded in 1980. Current projects include the delivery of 94 studio apartments in Liverpool, 178 student accommodation scheme within the Islington Regeneration Masterplan, and laboratory and administration facilities for clients AstraZeneca and Bristol Myers Squibb.
