Select starts on Embankment West apartments

Murraywood Construction has started site clearance and demolition for Select Property on its 209-home Laurence Place project, next to CitySuites at Embankment West, which will be its first project under its Origin Homes brand.

Origin Homes is the developer’s fourth brand, following CitySuites, used for its serviced apartments offering; Affinity Living, its homes for private rent; and Vita Student, a student accommodation brand aimed at postgraduate and affluent students.

Demolition and site clearance work started on 26 March to clear the way for the building, which is the central block of the developer’s Embankment West proposals. Reaching 16 storeys in height, the building is due to complete in 2020, and includes a mix of studio, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments.

Railway arches will be demolished or infilled, while Murraywood will also prepare the piling mat and some retaining walls for the project.

Select describes Origin Homes as “a flexible investment” platform and is marketing the apartments as an opportunity to “secure the strongest capital appreciation and the UK’s highest rental returns”.

The company has appointed digital marketing agency theEword to help promote Laurence Place, alongside its other developments.

Select revised its original application for Embankment West in September last year. The original proposals were for 694 flats across towers of 34, 25, and 14 storeys in height, and were given the go-ahead by Salford Council in 2016.

These proposals were originally brought forward in a joint venture with Ask, but the developer sold its interest in the site to Select last year.

The refreshed application, granted planning consent in November 2017, reduced the height of the buildings to 18, 18, and 16 storeys in height, and cut the number of apartments to around 500.

Both proposals were designed by CallisonRTKL, and sit next to the existing CitySuites building, which was completed by Carillion in 2017. The professional team also includes Curtins as transport planner, and Deloitte as planner.
