Salford seeks contractor for key junction works

The city council wants to upgrade a busy junction close to the border with Wigan to address concerns about pedestrian safety as plans for a £155m residential scheme nearby progress.

Salford City Council estimates work to improve the junction of Mosley Common Road and the East Lancs Road will cost £1.6m. The scheme will be funded through Salford’s highways capital programme.

Sign-off for the project was secured at a meeting of the council’s procurement board yesterday.

At present, the junction provides no controlled crossing facilities for pedestrians. The main part of the project will see toucan crossings installed.

The authority will go out to tender for the job, looking to procure a contractor from the STAR Highway Services Framework by August. Work could begin in September and complete this winter.

Cllr Mike McCusker, lead member for planning, transport and sustainable development at Salford City Council, said: “Pedestrians and cyclists say they avoid this junction because of the lack of modern, safe crossings. This scheme will help them and encourage more people to avoid using cars to ease congestion on the roads.”

Improvements to the junction are required to address a “lack of appropriate pedestrian and cycling facilities”, according to the city council.

Peel L&P’s plans to redevelop 156 acres in Tyldesley, which is located north of the site, into 1,100 homes are likely to place “additional pressure” on the junction in the future, the authority said.

Wigan Council signed off Peel’s vision for the site last September.

I wonder why Salford didn’t seek a contribution as part of the planning application for the Peel development if it will cause capacity issues at this junction?

Badly needed! However, Wigan BC need to consider impact to junction capacity.

This should go much further than controlled pedestrian crossings at this junction in isolation. The new developments along this corridor through to Astley should all be served by an expansion of the Vantage bus network, with guided sections through the developments and on-highway sections where appropriate.

That junction is already at over capacity. Once the new housing development up mosley Common Road is completed it will get worse. It will get worse still with pedestrian operated crossings.

I would build a massive cyclops here. Take away car lanes and provide them to cyclists
