Salford approves Bury New Road food venue

The city council has given the green light to plans to convert a former car repair centre into a 10-stall food hall and shisha bar.

Millson Group, a design practice that includes work on Mission Mars’ successful Albert’s Schloss among its portfolio, is working with the site owner and applicant the Al-Mehdi Group on the redevelopment of the disused former Lexus garage.

The site, located next to a Tim Hortons restaurant on the corner of Appian Way and Bury New Road, previously had consent for a multi-faith banqueting hall, but the applicant subsequently pivoted towards the idea of a food hall.

Plans for the development were submitted to Salford City Council in 2021.

To learn more about the project, search for reference number 21/78453/FUL on Salford City Council’s planning portal.

Millson’s design and access statement states that “development of this site into a multi-cuisine food hall and shisha bar will offer both employment opportunities to local residents and a location for start-up dining businesses in a similar vein to existing similar venues”.

The scheme is the latest in a long line of similar food venues to emerge in Greater Manchester. Others include Hatch on Manchester’s Oxford Road, Mackie Mayor in the Northern Quarter, and Society next to Bridgewater Hall.

Altrincham Market and Produce Hall in Stockport are among the most popular food venues outside of the city centre.

Earlier this week, Allied London lodged plans for a 30,000 sq ft dining destination at St John’s.

In Urmston, McGoff Group has planning permission for Market 41, a food hall that features 32 hotel rooms.

I cannot waaaait for this place to open. It will be great to have somewhere more upmarket to chose for food in the area. It will hopefully smarten up the area – it can’t get much more unaesthetically pleasing than a disused garage. Hopefully this and the closure of the dodgy shops at the bottom of the road will lead to many more developers being drawn here, leading to improvements in this area, which is a main entryway to the city. It’s great that this will bring more jobs for local people. I’m excited to see which vendors will operate here and intend to be one of the first customers.
