Salford announces interim chief executive

Salford City Council’s Melissa Caslake will take the reins from Tom Stannard, after his move over the Irwell to become Manchester City Council’s chief executive.

A permanent figure will be recruited in the new year, but an internal headhunt has seen Caslake appointed as Stannard’s temporary successor.

She will begin her role on 3 February next year, moving from her job as executive director for children’s services at Salford, which she has held for two years. She first joined as interim executive director in December 2022.

Caslake has previously held director roles in Children’s services in Devon, Westminster, and Kensington and Chelsea.

Paul Dennett, Salford City Mayor, said: “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Melissa Caslake as the new interim chief executive of Salford City Council.

“She brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to our community.”

He continued: “Melissa’s expertise and dedication will be invaluable in driving forward our initiatives and ensuring that Salford remains a vibrant and thriving city.

“We are confident that she will continue Tom’s legacy of excellence and ensure that the good work is carried on throughout her time as interim.”

In her role at Salford, Caslake led teams to improve the quality of children’s homes provision, and secured partnerships with the National Literacy Trust and strived to make Salford a recognised ‘Child Friendly City’.

Caslake said: “I am delighted to be taking up the role of interim chief executive, and working together with elected members and officers to take forward our priorities for Salford residents.”
