Sainsbury’s at Great Homer Street approved
Liverpool City Council has given the green light to a revised planning application from Sainsbury’s for a 40,000 sq ft foodstore, to anchor St Modwen’s Project Jennifer.
Sainsbury’s plans to begin construction at the North Liverpool site by the summer, with the store opening in spring 2017.
The development on Great Homer Street has spent a decade working through the planning process due to various aspects being altered, reflecting changes in market demand since the supermarket committed to the scheme in 2010.
The anchor supermarket has been reduced in size from 110,000 sq ft gross, 60,000 sq ft net trading floor area, to 67,000 sq ft gross, 40,000 sq ft net. Sainsbury’s is also delivering 23,000 sq ft of smaller retail units.
St Modwen has planning permission for 80,000 sq ft of retail space, let to other operators, which is due to open to coincide with the completion of the Sainsbury’s store next year.
At the same planning committee meeting, which took place on Tuesday 22 March, Liverpool City Council also approved the conversion of the 100,000 sq ft Corn Exchange office on Brunswick Street into a 200-suite aparthotel, to be operated by StayCity.

There used to be a Chandler, ( not much call for ships, nowadays) a butcher ( See Sainsbury’s), a furniture shop ( DFS have clinched the market), a newsagents ( no one reads anymore) and the Dolphin Chippy! What’s happened there then? (everyone is healthy eating?)

This. Really is a case of the people of the Scotland road area being treated like Idiots by St Modwen who have led this Council by the nose to a place where they wanted to be 10 years ago.
All along the have chipped away at the initial promises they made.
An absolute disgrace what’s happening to this project and the only one you can blame is this toothless council.
We should all remember their name when they are up for Re election.

The Great Homer Street corridor has got to be one of the most soulless stretches of road in England. I’m not surprised it was recently used as a filming location for the film Doom Days.

Better that the supermarket will be smaller. The very large ones have had their day. The new housing across the Everton / Kirkdale border is looking great and bringing new owner occupiers back to central/north Liverpool. As in the south around Park Road this area should start to revive further as the city centre fills up.
