Royal Nawaab awaits Stockport Pyramid confirmation

The Royal Nawaab Group wants to change the building’s use to transform the iconic Stockport Pyramid into a huge buffet restaurant.

The application submitted by NK Architects proposes the development of more than 5,000 sq ft of floorspace.

On the ground floor, a 360-person capacity restaurant would have a theatre kitchen, buffet counter, private VIP dining rooms, and back kitchen provision.

Guests would enter the building passing through a reception and waiting area.

The first floor would host a large banquet hall, with space for 680 covers. The floor would also provide a bride room, prayer rooms, and another kitchen.

A third banquet hall on the second floor plans to have a 300-seat capacity, with a smaller ancillary hall for a party of up to 150 guests.

The third floor would be used for storage.

Office space provided on the fourth floor is expected to be used by Royal Nawaab for its own administration purposes.

In total, the building’s capacity reaches just below 1,500 guests, with around 150 members of staff.

Car parking would be provided for 407 vehicles, with 20 spaces reserved for disability permit holders.

The Stockport Pyramid was built in 1992 as an office development, as part of a wider Kings Valley scheme that was never finished.

The previous tenants, the Co-operative Bank, left the building in 2018 and it has been vacant since.

Stockport’s MP, Navendu Mishra, supported the application. He said: “The Pyramid is an iconic and well-known structure on the Stockport landscape, and it is a detriment that it has been vacant for several years.”

He added he would “like to see it brought back to life to complement Stockport’s vibrant cultural offer”.

The application will go before the Heatons and Reddish area committee on Monday and before the Central Area committee on Thursday.

The planning and highways regulation committee will make the final determination.
