Rowland snaps up site of infamous Oldham school

Chadderton School South, which hit the headlines in 2007 following reports of staff abuse at the hands of pupils, will be redeveloped into 149 homes.

Oldham Council has appointed Rowland Homes to transform the Butterworth Lane site following a formal tender process.

Rowland’s bid was the strongest financially and “provides for a significantly reduced risk of non-delivery or renegotiation”, according to a council report.

Plans for the redevelopment of the former Chadderton School South site will now be drawn up. They will feature low-carbon homes built to the government’s Future Homes Standard and incorporating technologies such as heat pumps.

Of the 149 homes planned, 89 will be available on the open market. The remaining 60 will be available on a variety of affordable tenures including social rent, affordable rent, shared ownership, and first homes.

The site in question hit the headlines in 2007 when a so-called “anarchy diary” written by a member of the school’s staff was leaked. It outlines troubling conditions within the school including attacks on staff by pupils. The school closed in 2012 and reopened as the Collective Spirit Free School the following year.

It lasted until 2017 but closed after a poor Ofsted report.

The site is one of more than 20 council-owned sites earmarked for disposal to support the creation of 3,000 homes.

I live near this land and am looking to move as the property i’m in now, on the Avenue, is getting harder to deal with as i’m disabled. very interested to see what they do here.

No new doctors surgeries, school places or dentists. Squeezing more people into an already vastly populated area given the new houses built just off foxdenton. It’s a ridiculous proposal.

Good to see derelict land being used but shame it took so long, 3000 homes in the pipeline. Anonymous rants about lack of this and that need to give their head a wobble. New houses are needed, this is a fact and it’s not going away anytime soon. Go and knock on your Labour councillors door and ask about the shortage of services, they have the money from the land sales and 3000 new council tax payers…

Nice to see a quality builder has won the bid. South Chadderton given its proximity to Manchester is lively to become more desirable for professionals looking for a traditional home. However I agree that it will put additional pressure on ready I er stretched services. I am also interested to see how the additional traffic on Butterworth Lane will be managed.
