Rhyl’s beachfront aquarium soon to be razed

Balfour Beatty has begun the demolition of the 30-year-old tourist attraction, SeaQuarium, on Rhyl promenade. The process is expected to take around six weeks to complete.

Demolition of the aquarium will clear valuable seafront land for the council, which hopes to use the promenade to improve beachfront links to the town centre.

The aquarium closed in November 2023, a Denbighshire County Council application was then lodged seeking consent to demolish the aquarium.

Balfour Beatty is currently engaged nearby on a £69m coastal defence scheme which will replace more than 600 metres of tired and vulnerable sea walls.

SeaQuarium had blamed disruptive seafront works as a key factor for its closure.

Denbighshire County Council have previously noted that work on flood defences was “essential” in order to protect Rhyl’s homes.

Such a shame as there’s literally no reason to visit Rhyl now, and it has so much potential.

Were the residents thrown back into the sea?
