Residential developers on alert for 19-acre Wirral site

Vacant for more than 20 years, a former Ministry of Defence fuel storage site in Bromborough is now up for sale with planning permission for 250 homes.

Wirral Council has appointed Lambert Smith Hampton to sell the 19-acre Old Hall Road site having secured consent for its redevelopment last year.

The sale is of part of a wider disposal programme being undertaken by Wirral Council as it seeks to release new land for employment and residential uses.

Despite being allocated within Wirral Council’s adopted unitary development plan as an employment site, no subsequent employment development has been forthcoming and conversion to residential use has been reflected within the emerging Wirral Local Plan.

Charles McLean, LSH’s national land director, said: “Wirral has experienced a historic undersupply of new houses and there continues to be a desperate need for new homes.

“We are delighted to bring forward this potential housing site on behalf of Wirral Council and we expect strong interest from both regional and national housebuilders.”

Last March, Wirral Council’s economy, regeneration and housing committee, declared the site surplus to requirements and announced its intention to dispose of it.

Aew Architects and Stantec advised the council on securing planning permission for the residential scheme on the site, which has been partially remediated courtesy of a Homes England grant.

A neighbouring 18-acre site, owned by Riverside Park, could be redeveloped into 283 homes.

this would have made a great industrial development site, lots of demand. However the council pushed for residential use in this employment area.

I’m in favour of new housing because it’s desperately needed in wirral however I also have to ask 250houses means if 4 to a house an extra 1000 people housed great but are we going to get more GPS or space at our already overstretched hospitals to help with the needs of the extra demands this development would bring!

Are we overpopulated ? Is the employment growing too ?

Census advised pop grew by 417 in 10 years why more housing. We won’t get more doctors nurses etc what about damage to protected woodland next door to site.

I live close to this development and I’m all for new housing but the local schools and doctors are already packed so where are the upgrades to those facilities in Bromborough?
