Renaker starts work on Chester Road

Construction has begun on 188 apartments across two blocks at 2-4 Chester Road, a 40,000 sq ft scrubland plot on the edge of Castlefield Basin, the development of which was fiercely opposed by local residents.

Developer Renaker Build submitted an application in 2016, with OMI Architects designing the 21 and 12-storey towers.

Plans to build were approved in February after a delay following opposition from developer Castlefield Estate and residents’ group Castlefield Forum. Both groups said the development would dwarf the basin, which is a historic conservation area.

The blocks will sit near to the grade two-listed Congregation Chapel and grade two-listed viaduct. Plans a gym, a resident’s lounge, basement car park with 166 spaces and a private terrace connecting the blocks.

The project is estimated for completion in 2019.

Other Renaker developments in Manchester include its 1,500 apartments on Owen Street, opposite the Chester Road site, and 22 and 29-storey residential buildings housing 282 flats at No1 Cambridge Street.
