Religious community tables Urmston cinema conversion plan
Located off Bowfell Road, the former Curzon Cinema is earmarked for redevelopment into a community hub by church group CRC.
Plans submitted to Trafford Council propose the transformation of the disused Urmston building, which ceased being a cinema in 2008, into a multi-use venue.
CRC a national church group with a base on nearby Brook Road, will use the main auditorium for Sunday services.
The intention is for the auditorium to be a flexible space that could also accommodate community, leisure, hospitality, and educational events.
A coffee shop and office space are also planned for the ground floor and first floor respectively.
Brass Architecture is advising CRC on the plans. Planning Insights is advising on planning matters.
Last year, developer Raynor Rowen pulled the plug on plans to convert the building into 42 apartments after backlash from residents and Trafford Council.

Why don’t they turn it back into a cinema or turn it into a restaurant

Looks good! Pedestrianise that space outside please, like in the render.

Really a terrible lack of parking. Why not consider demolishing the Curzon and replacing it with a multistory car park?

The reason this venue closed as a cinema was lack of support.
My wife and I visited one evening and besides the ticket lady, ice cream lady and manager, we were the only people there.
On the way out the manager, as always, stood at the exit and thanked us for coming. The Curzon closed as a cinema shortly afterwards.
Good luck with the venture.

Thought it was going to be a cinema again am disappointed

Parking MAJOR issue, insufficient already. Residents rightly park, unfortunately so do Trafford General staff at all times, parking is a real drawback for any planning permission requested. Residents concerns must not be overridden by eagerness to put this building back into use!

Sounds like what some readers need is a multi-storey car park that they can go and worship in Urmston.
I wish good luck to CRC and their project to make use of a building that has been closed for over a decade. May the taxi and bus drivers safely transport the visitors to the multi functional venue, there are a lot of bad drivers in cars these days.

No parking! Need a large multi-storey with a larger underground cavern for car storage at minimum. Are any nearby units available that could also be used for car storage?

Why bother building cities at all? I envisage a world of nothing but car parks. Let’s get rid of all the houses, businesses, forests, nature, parks and green space and concrete over all of it. That way everyone will have somewhere to park. It’ll be a dream world – like Coventry or post-war Birmingham.

Whatever they use this building for parking will always be an issue to the surrounding residents, a significant amount of which do not have access to off road parking. Trafford should give serious consideration to providing a pay and display parking area.

Anonymous 6.19am – Who are “they”? Do you mean investors? Why would “they” put their money into a cinema which has already failed? See Terry’s post to see why “they” will not turn it back into a cinema.

Who needs multi storey carpark plenty of parking Urmston!!too many cars put people first 🙄

The Planning Application will have a Traffic Impact Statement if anyone cares to look. 8 years empty is a shame for this iconic building which will still be open for the public to enjoy.

Unless Trafford General opens a staff car park this location will always be a nightmare.
The shops and restaurant on the sides of the cinema lose business due to the appalling congestion
Staff from the hospital park all day on all the roads surrounding the hospital

Quite. It’s a decent slice of art deco and can only imagine the new owners will use this to its full potential – Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement churches are rarely empty.
By Rye
At least it is not being demolished!

Saving this Art Deco style building for future generations is important. Also the CRC conversion to bring it back into use will be a fantastic resource for the whole community, not only a Hub for locals, but an amazing resource, hope and outreach to everyone!
Don’t let other issues stop it, there is parking down other roads like Bowfell if you look

Turn it onto something useful for teenagers..perhaps a skating rink
By Anonymous
Something for teenagers would be so much better there is nothing in the area for them.

What’s all this about a perceived car parking problem, no more or less than when it was the cinema, or FAPA, good luck to them!

No Mr Giggles, you have misunderstood. I don’t want an MSCP, I want to park for free. My big ass Hyundai is going on the public road outside my wee house and if anyone else gets ideas about using that space then it will be very inconvenient for me. Happy to clear that up. 😙
