Rail division to move as Stobart gears up at Carlisle Airport

Stobart Rail & Civils is to move its head office to Carlisle Lake District Airport, the infrastructure business has announced.

The move will see around 180 employees relocate to office space in a new terminal building, decanting from the organisation’s current bases. The first wave of staff will move from Solway Business Centre from June, followed by employees based at Stobart’s Blackdyke Road site.

The airport, which has been owned by Stobart Group since 2009, is currently being upgraded ahead of commercial and business flights being launched in June, the first commercial flights since 1993.

Connections to London Southend, also owned by Stobart, are planned, along with Dublin and Belfast, although no carriers have been confirmed to date.

Richard Butcher, chief executive of Stobart Infrastructure, said: “This is an important milestone for the business as we gear up for the future.

“It’s also an exciting time as we look forward to the move and as commercial and business flights take off from Carlisle Lake District Airport from June.”

CLDA’s enhancement is classed as an important part of the infrastructure plan Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership’s infrastructure plan, as the LEP seeks to maximise tourism revenue, particularly from international visitors.

The LEP is supporting the developments, which includes runway improvements and parking along with the terminal, with £4.95m of funding.

The construction project is being led in-house by Stobart Rail, with the professional team including Penrith drainage contractor Waitings, H&M Groundworks of Appleby and Border Steelwork of Carlisle.
