Radisson scores with hotel at £300m Man City scheme

The global hotel chain has agreed terms with City Football Group to operate the 401-key building within its wider North Stand redevelopment.

Radisson Hotel Group plans to open the ‘upper-upscale’ hotel, branded The Medlock, late next year. It will adjoin Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, close to Co-op Live.

The Medlock will feature deluxe and standard rooms, as well as a penthouse suite. It will also offer events space, food and drink outlets, a roof walk and museum experience, and 43,000 sq ft of commercial office space in the expanded stadium area.

The hotel, designed by WATG, forms part of a wider £300m project that will see the capacity of the stadium increase to 60,000 by adding a second tier and 7,700 seats to the North stand. The project also features plans for a 3,000-capacity covered fan zone.

Roel de Vries, Chief Operating Officer at City Football Group, said: “Today’s announcement is an exciting moment as we reveal the name of our hotel as ‘The Medlock’ and welcome globally renowned hotelier, Radisson Hotel Group to the Etihad Campus.

“Radisson Hotel Group’s enthusiasm and passion for the Club’s hotel project is clear, and we firmly believe that its industry experience, together with the Club’s ambition and vision for the hotel, is the perfect combination.”

The Etihad hotel is not by any means Radisson’s only offering at a sports venue, Elie Younes, executive vice president and global chief development officer at Radisson Hotel Group, said.

“This hotel is a fantastic addition to a growing portfolio of several stadium-based properties in the UK, like Edgbaston Stadium and the Allianz Stadium Twickenham.

“Our brands are always relevant to both our owners and our guests. We are thrilled to collaborate with Manchester City Football Club and create a global flagship hotel within the world-class Etihad Campus in Manchester.”

For a “global flagship hotel” (their words not mine) they’ve come up with an extremely dated and generic looking 1960s office block!

Great to see a comeback for the much-lamented retro-communist brutalism. Design awards, incoming…

What a missed architectural opportunity for a striking landmark structure befitting the stadium. This has the look of a 1960’s office block.

At 401 bedrooms will this be the largest hotel in Greater Manchester ? Hope they’ve factored in conference rooms. Great addition to the complex.

I understand the current capacity of the Etihad Stadium is 53,400 so my maths tells me that 7,700 seats equates to 61,100. I’ve always heard figures of up to 62,000.

Walked past this absolute monstrosity the other day extremely underwhelming design think city would have to upgrade this stadium in the next 10 years just to keep up with competitors

Not a very nice looking stadium is it !!!!

I thought they were clearing all the 60’s blocks in the area, not building them

Who (man or woman not fictituous legal entity) is responsible and should be made accountable for this eye-sore? Roger Scruton argued that buildings should be beautiful to behold. A daft idea?

For the life of me I can’t fathom why they are expanding the Etihad, it’s totally unnecessary. The design of the hotel is lacking and uninspired. Fanzone will be a good addition though.

Whilst its never going to be a harmonisation of the faculties in terms of beauty to coin a phrase, its good to see the continued investment and regeneration of this area
