Plans lodged for St Helens medical glass factory

Located next to the recently completed Glass Futures research and development hub, the soon-to-be-vacant JK Phillips warehouse is to be converted into a facility for making vials and test tubes.

SINA Medical Glass is behind the plans to transform the industrial unit, located on a seven-acre just outside the town centre next to the rugby stadium, into a medical glass manufacturing and innovation centre.

SINA’s facility will be the first of its kind in the UK, according to a planning statement by consultancy Spawforths.

The need for such a development became clear during the Covid-19 pandemic, which “exposed the UK’s reliance on overseas raw materials and vials”, the planning statement said.

The onshoring of glass vial production in St Helens builds on the town’s glass production heritage and the recent launch of Glass Futures next door. Glass Futures is designed to drive innovation in glass technology and position St Helens as a global glassmaking powerhouse.

Broadway Malyan is leading on the design of the facility. Hoare Lea is providing energy consultancy and Curtins is the transport and civil engineer.

J K Phillips, a storage and distribution firm, currently occupies the building but has plans to relocate.

Lets hope this sails through and spades are in the ground asap. Id hope there’s provision for solar and wind turbines to help bring running costs down to help the long term future of the site and reducing its environmental impact.
