Plans in for Worsley homes and marina site
Plans have been submitted to Salford City Council for a £53m residential and leisure development at the side of the Bridgewater Canal in Worsley.
Taylor Wimpey UK and Peel Investments hope to build 600 houses alongside leisure facilities including a marina and cafe, retail units and informal green space.
A planning application has been submitted for two adjoining sites in the Broadoak area of Worsley totalling almost 83 acres.
The scheme includes 3.5 acres of "ecological mitigation" and improvements are proposed to Worsley Woods, local cycle paths and the Worsley Loop Line footpath.
Proposals have already met with local opposition from a campaign group calling itself Residents Against Greenbelt Erosion.
Town planning consultants Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners are advising Peel and Taylor Wimpey on the scheme.
Randall Thorp are landscape architects and TTHC are advising on traffic issues.
A briefing summary supporting the application states: "The council has a substantial shortfall of housing land and is unable to demonstrate that it has a deliverable five year housing land supply.
"The site is also sustainably located in relation to key services and facilities.
"The development of the site proactively drives and supports sustainable economic development delivering homes that meet the needs of the local area.
"It responds to the need to deliver higher quality, family and aspirational housing.
"Worsley is one of the few areas within Salford that has the ability to provide housing of the very highest quality, which the City Region is lacking.
"It will therefore create a more viable and balanced community.
"The development of the site will provide significant economic, social and environmental benefits.
"In particular, the provision of housing will fund the delivery of the marina thereby facilitating the council's aspirations for Worsley to become a significant visitor destination, in line with the Bridgewater Canal Masterplan."
