Plans in for former greyhound racing track

Galliford Try Partnerships plans to redevelop the Ellesmere Port Greyhound Stadium to make way for 155 mixed-tenure homes, following its acquisition of the site from Cheshire West & Chester Council in December for £3.65m.

Linden Homes, the residential marketing arm of Galliford Try, has submitted a planning application for the 10-acre site off Thornton Road.

Of the 155 homes, 110 of the units will be for open market sale under the Linden Homes North West brand and 45 will be affordable homes to be built for Cheshire West & Chester Council.

The council has retained the freehold interest in the site.

If planning is approved, Galliford Try Partnerships aims to start construction in spring 2016.

The Thornton Road stadium was bought by Liverpool-based director Phillip Warren in 2013 and was renovated to include new racing facilities and kennels. However the stadium closed in early 2014 and has been vacant ever since.

The council worked alongside Warren’s company Ellesmere Port Greyhound Stadium on the sale.

Darren Leary, development director at Galliford Try Partnerships, said: “We are delighted to have been selected by Cheshire West & Chester Council for the redevelopment of such an important scheme. It is testament to our proven expertise in delivering both high-quality and affordable housing projects. We have worked in partnership with the Council to develop plans to support the continued regeneration of the Ellesmere Port.”
