Pennington Wharf Marina takes shape
British Waterways Marinas has started work to create 58 moorings at Pennington Wharf Marina on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Wigan.
The marina will form part of the wider redevelopment of the area by Taylor Wimpey, which is building 471 homes at the Plank Lane site in Leigh.
The acquisition of the water space for development by British Waterways Marinas was agreed in partnership with land owner, the Homes & Communities Agency, and Taylor Wimpey. The works are due to commence in mid-summer, with the marina scheduled to open in September 2016. The works will be undertaken by contractor of Intermarine and Rolec Services.
The marina will form a key facility between routes to Manchester, the Cheshire Ring and historic Worsley Delph and the main line of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Wigan. It is also close to Pennington Flash, a 490-acre country park.
Darren Bramhall, operations director for British Waterways Marinas, said: “We are pleased to be working with both the HCA and Taylor Wimpey, who are managing the wider redevelopment of the site, to develop a well-designed marina with a good range of modern marine facilities and to establish the moorers as part of the new community being created.”
Gareth Bancroft, land and planning manager at Taylor Wimpey Manchester, added: “We have been developing Pennington Wharf for just over two years now so it’s great to see that everything is taking shape.
“The marina is one of the key selling points of the scheme, so we’re excited to see what BWML has in store for the area.”
British Waterways Marinas operates 18 marinas already.
