Peel site staging MIF events

Peel's Media City has been chosen for two events aimed at children and families at this year's Manchester International Festival in the summer.

Music Boxes, a free two week long event, will see the 5-acre public realm at Media City transformed into a musical adventure playground, designed for children aged 6 months to 7 years old.

The event will feature reclaimed shipping containers, transformed into spaces for children, including customised recording and animation studios, miniature performance spaces, ukulele workshops, interactive installations from artists and organisations including the BBC Philharmonic and CBeebies.

International theatre company Punchdrunk will also debut its new show The Crash of Elysium at Media City, for children aged 6-12.

The production, created by artistic director Felix Barrett and screen writer Tom McRae, is the company's first show specifically made for children.

Developer Peel is supporting the festival as gold corporate partners for an undisclosed sum.

Stephen Wild, managing director of Media City, said: "We are thrilled that Media City UK is to be one of the locations for the Manchester International Festival. The piazza here at Salford Quays is purpose built for events and is the perfect space for innovative, creative productions of this kind."

The festival, which takes place biennially, will showcase more than 20 world premieres and special events in and around Manchester for eighteen days from Thursday 30 June.

The festival programme also includes shows from Snoop Dogg, Bjork and Sinead O' Connor, with new theatre productions from artists including Victoria Wood, Rufus Norris and Damon Albarn.
