Peel lines up plastics recycler for Protos

Recycling company Advanced Sustainable Developments is in talks with Peel Environmental as it seeks to open its first UK site at the Protos energy park in Ellesmere Port.

ASD is looking to set up special purpose vehicles in different territories to develop and fund recycling facilities. The business has said that it will open a facility in Abu Dhabi, as part of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Vision 2030 project, and has also signed a memorandum of understanding with French environmental business Veolia.

The business said that the Protos plant will implement proven technology in recycling PET plastic into food-grade materials. ASD’s website describes the projects as “creating world class sustainable plastic recycling facilities to divert polluting plastic waste away from landfill disposal,” continuing: “From discarded PET waste, we shall create plastic pellets and mono-sheets that will be locally used in their respective region, minimising importation of recycled materials and cutting out the carbon from logistics transportation.

“These facilities will initially target the local feedstock market and ASD will develop a pioneering blueprint for plastics recycling wherever we operate. Our blueprint stems from the fact that our systems provide a solution for each step of the recycling value chain, uniting every contributor in the process.”

Chief executive Ahmed Detta said: “We look forward to working in the North West and bringing our innovative technology to the region. We hope the people of the North West will embrace the circular economy and work with us to make recycling a social norm and help make the UK a world leader in recycling.

“We hope to work with Peel Environmental, who are aligned with our vision in creating and supporting innovative technology in the North West of England”.

Myles Kitcher, managing director of Peel Environmental said: ”Our vision for Protos has always been about using innovative technologies to create value from waste, recover resources and provide low carbon energy sources which then can be used on site and exported to the local area. The ASD technology could complement other developments at Protos which are looking to create a use from waste plastic and divert it from landfill.”

ASD, which was registered with Companies House in 2016 in London, said that it hopes to build relationships with organisations and charities in the North West to promote sustainability. The business has the support of Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Cheshire West & Chester Council.

Peel Environmental has been highly active with Protos in recent months, announcing a deal earlier this month for Waste2Tricity to develop a hydrogen-from-waste facility. Plans were submitted in March for a £150m natural gas plant, while Peel and Covanta advanced energy-from-waste plans in 2018.
