Oldham pushes deadline for hotel scheme bids

The council hopes to appoint a developer to deliver a four-star, 120-bedroom hotel on the site of the former magistrates’ court on West Street, as part of a £306m town centre regeneration. 

Oldham Council had already invited expressions of interest from potential developers to build the hotel, and has now extended the submissions deadline, originally set for the end of June, to 21 September. 

The process is being led by agent Savills, which the council instructed to market the opportunity. 

Oldham Council bought the 1.6-acre plot on which stood Oldham Magistrates’ Court in February 2018 and demolished the former court buildings. 

As well as 120 bedrooms, the proposed hotel could feature conference and events facilities, including 6,500 sq ft of meeting space. A bar, restaurant and gym is also mooted. 

No plans have yet been submitted for the scheme.

The council’s wider regeneration of Oldham town centre is planned deliver 2,000 homes, an enhanced retail offer and a £13m arts and heritage centre at the former Oldham Library.  

Northern Roots, an urban farm and eco-park covering 160-acres at Alexandra Park, is also contained in the plans.
