NWDA brochure aims to grow £10m golf tourism revenue
The North West Development Agency today published a 56-page brochure promoting the England's Golf Coast brand to help drive related tourism spend in the region.
The launch of the latest golf coast campaign, managed by The Mersey Partnership, is designed to coincide with the British Open at Royal Birkdale, Southport, later this month.
Around 200,000 golf fans from across the world, together with a global broadcast audience of tens of millions, will turn their attention towards Royal Birkdale for the event.
The NWDA's brochure features the three Royal courses – Birkdale, Liverpool and Lytham St Annes – plus 16 other "naturally challenging courses". It also contains details of how to book golfing breaks, building on the existing £10m a year impact that the NWDA says golf tourism has on the local economy.
The growth in leisure investment in recent years has seen golf come to the fore in schemes such as Maghull's £12m Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa revamp, the regeneration of Southport, and the imminent development tender by Wirral council for a golf course and hotel alongside Royal Liverpool in Hoylake.
Charlie Grimley, England's Golf Coast development manager at TMP, said: "The North West has the best stretch of natural championship golf in the world, and around 200,000 people will be visiting it this summer for the British Open at Royal Birkdale.
"This publication is a superb guide to all that is good in the region, offering information, facts, figures and details of how golfing enthusiasts can return to the Northwest for a golfing break. This, together with our website, is an excellent way of reaching a huge international audience."
