Nick Johnson

Nick Johnson appointed by CABE

CABE, the Government’s advisor on architecture, urban design and public space, has appointed Nick Johnson as one of three new commissioners. Johnson is the deputy chief executive of Manchester-based developer Urban Splash.

Margaret Hodge, minister for culture, also appointed Piers Gough, principal of CZWG Architects and Hanif Kara, structural engineer and co-founder and director of Adams Kara Taylor, to the board of CABE, chaired by John Sorrell.

Over the past 10 years Johnson and Urban Splash were responsible for Britannia Basin in Castlefield, Manchester. He also leads the project team for New Islington, Manchester’s Millennium Community, and Park Hill, Sheffield, Europe’s largest listed building. He is a distinguished Visiting Fellow of Architecture at Yale University and Chair of Marketing Manchester.

John Sorrell, chair of CABE, commented: “CABE is delighted to be welcoming such eminent new commissioners. Nick Johnson, Piers Gough and Hanif Kara bring with them a wide range of experience, and impressive records in their respective fields. We are extremely grateful for the dedicated and creative contributions made by Dickon Robinson, Louisa Hutton and Brian Boylan who are stepping down.”

CABE has 16 commissioners appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. They are appointed for a four-year term and serve for a maximum of two terms. Commissioner posts are advertised in the national press. Appointments are made to represent the broad range of built environment professions and to reflect the diversity of England’s population.

Johnson’s appointment will begin on 15 December 2007.
